Just as important, though, he’s maintained a strong sense of altruism that’s extended itself to his final season via the Eloquence in Movement Project. True, he’s had highs, and he’s had lows, but he’s come out the other side as an open book, full of unabashed opinion and candor. And because of this sense of openness, there isn’t much that we don’t know about his career. Luckily, though, my interests tend to be more human than professional. In this interview, we discuss favorite authors, who has the best record collection in the peloton, and what David plans on doing with his life post-retirement. Enjoy.

Certainly, it would have been unimaginable in 1996, when the 19-year-old Millar headed from the cycling backwater of Great Britain to the promised land of France with only his dreams and a meagre grant to sustain him.
Back then, Millar was choosing the possibility of a career as a professional cyclist over the safer option of art college. And so it seems fitting that one of London’s top arts venues will host an evening in which he will reflect on life in the peloton, discuss a potential film starring him, and look ahead to his final season.

Time reels past in a vivid blur of words for this is a conversation fuelled less by the cups of coffee lining the table in a cafe on High Street Kensington than by a tumultuous year in professional cycling. Ca faisait neuf ans qu’il n’avait plus gagné sur les routes du Tour. David Millar vient de réussir à remporter sa quatrième étape sur le Tour de France depuis ses débuts professionnels, mais la première depuis son retour de suspension pour dopage en 2006. L’histoire de David Millar, on la connait tous. Mis en examen en 2004 pour détention de produits dopants, il a purgé une peine de deux ans. Revenu au sein de l’équipe Saunier Duval, avec laquelle il reste jusqu’en 2007, il quitte l’équipe Espagnole, qui avait dû, par la suite, se retirer du Tour 2008 après le contrôle positif de son leader Riccardo Ricco. Il arrive alors dans l’équipe Garmin où il cultive l’image du renouveau, s’inscrivant ainsi parfaitement dans la ligne directrice de sa nouvelle formation. Si la Garmin a remporté son premier Grand Tour cette année avec Ryder Hesjedal sur le Giro, elle a beaucoup plus de mal sur ce Tour où ses deux leaders ont abandonné et où son sprinter maison, Tyler Farrar, vainqueur de la troisième étape sur le Tour 2011, ne parvient pas à s’immiscer à la hauteur des Cavendish et Greipel. Très heureux de sa victoire, David Millar a bien voulu livrer quelques impressions à Cyclism’Actu.
