After four years away Michael Matthews has returned to Team BikeExchange and is convinced that he’s a more mature team leader and well-rounded rider than the one that left at the end of 2016. The Australian spent the last four campaigns at Sunweb, and although those seasons were littered with wins and even a Tour de France green jersey, the 30-year-old knew that in order to keep challenging for top honours he needed to leave.

t’s been a bumpy road to Tour de France glory for Michael Matthews. A long-awaited debut in 2014 was thwarted by a crash in training just days before the start, and last year’s campaign was derailed by a crash on stage 3 that left the Canberran with four broken ribs.

In part one of our exclusive interview with Michael Matthews he explained his fifth place in the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday. This was meant to be his last Classics appearance for the season but he’s now ready to race again in la Flèche Wallonne on Wednesday and possibly even Liège-Bastogne-Liège next Sunday.

Amongst all the recent doom and gloom in cycling I thought we'd focus today on young man with a bright future ahead. I've kept a keen eye on Michael Matthews ever since the 2007 Tour of Bright when a bunch of us A-graders were riding full-gas up Mt Hotham and he passed us like we were standing still. We all thought it was an attack from within A-Grade until we all looked at each other and realised he was wearing a B-Grade number. Michael went on to winning B-Grade which was just the start of what will be a tremendously successful career. Here's what Michael had to say about his interests, his nickname, and his riding.

As a Jayco Skins Cyling Team rider, Michael 'Bling' Matthews represented Australia in the 2010 UCI World Championships in Geelong and became the new U23 Road Racing World Champion. Matthews has come out and shown he is ready to compete at the top level of cycling.
