A former European U23 Road Race champion, and with two Polish National jerseys to her name, Kasia has become one of the world’s top riders in recent years. So it was no surprise to us when she used her cycling brain to take advantage on stage 1 of the Tour of Britain in 2017, to ride into green and take the lead.

Katarzyna "Kasia" Niewiadoma won the third edition of the women’s Amstel Gold Race since its 2017 reintroduction. The former Polish champion attacked on the last of four ascents of the famed Cauberg climb and soloed to success, bagging a first WorldTour win for her Canyon-SRAM team this year.

Kasia Niewiadoma attacked solo with 9km remaining. It wasn’t particularly pretty – Niewiadoma heaved and strained at the pedals after 131 sodden kilometres of racing – but her win resonated with anyone watching. It was gutsy, passionate and unbounded. A bit of an analogue rebellion in a digital, power-metered age. Even if she hadn’t won, raw aggression like hers is why people get into the sport. If she had looked back, she would have seen Amada Spratt...
